Carolina Dreaming is a photostory about the place and the culture I experienced while living in the Outer Banks in North Carolina. I chose to name the story Carolina Dreaming because I felt that, in many ways, the location there paralleled that of Southern California in the 1950's. Honestly, I am not sure why. The only knowledge I have of Southern California about that time is through cultural references. At the time I missed living in Southern California and I suppose living close to the ocean again brought back memories of my time there.
The area has a rich history going back to colonial times, before the American Revolution. People there have a lot of pride in their heritage and their traditions. Though nowhere is perfect, and I did see more racism than I had in other parts of the country, I also saw people who were very genuine and straightforward about who they are and what they believe in. It seemed that for every person I found myself at odds with, there was another person I found to be just the opposite. In short, there were a lot of contradictions, a tremendous natural beauty, a rich history, and a whole lot of fishing.
